Presents major genres of American music from the colonial period to present. Presents a balanced perspective of the origins, culture and the development of American music. Unique American contributions such as minstrel music, Tin Pan Alley, musical theater, ragtime, blues, jazz, country, rock and art music are presented along with the music of Billings, Gottschalk, MacDowell, Ives, Copland, Bernstein, and others. If prerequisite courses are not met instructor approval is required.
