Examines structure and expression of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genes. Topics include experimental techniques used to clone, express, and analyze DNA sequences; chromosome and gene structure; mechanisms of DNA replication and repair; mechanisms of transcription and translation; the regulation of transcription; RNA processing and post-transcriptional regulation; gene regulation in development; and molecular mechanisms of mutagenesis and cancer. Includes discussion of current literature and use of on-line resources for analysis of DNA sequences. Graduate students must complete additional course requirements. This class is available for graduate credit.
