Description:
-
Spanish for Social Services will teach students basic Spanish skills to be used in community and social service settings, such as law enforcement, firefighters, and social workers. Given the growth of the Spanish speaking population in South Carolina, the social work practitioner is likely to encounter a wide range of Spanish speakers. Cross-cultural competence in social work requires a keen understanding of language and cultural sensitivities of the Spanish speaking population within the United States. The course will enable English speaking students to learn how to communicate cross-culturally with Spanish-speakers using basic Spanish while at the same time develop culturally sensitive skills. Through immersive and communicative activities, students will develop proficiency in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing in Spanish at the novice-level (or above) as established by the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
