This course will examine major concepts, interpretations and perspectives in the academic discipline of Black (Africana) Studies. This course will chronologically follow the black experience and black thought from slavery and colonization, through the American Civil War and Reconstruction eras, to the emergence of Jim Crow, the Harlem Renaissance and the Great Depression, to the origins of the modern civil rights movement that began during WWII and emerged as a national social movement in the 1950s and the 1960s, through the post-Civil Rights Movement era "proper" and Black Power, through today and Black Lives Matter.
