(Fulfills MNTC Area: 6, 7) This course focuses on the indelible impact the African musical and cultural aesthetic has had on the formation of America's contemporary music and popular culture. From its West African roots to today's Hip Hop, the course will examine Black American music including spirituals, blues, jazz, black symphonic and concert music, gospel, R&B, soul, funk, and rap through an exploration of the music, artistry, and the social dynamics of American society. This course is for all levels of musical ability, knowledge, and familiarity. Prerequisite: None.
