This survey course will follow the development of British literature from the Industrial Revolution, through the rise of Britain as a global power, to its post-colonial present. Students will encounter literary works representing a diverse range of voices and viewpoints while exploring texts in their historical and cultural contexts. Analysis of works in a range of genres, including poetry, short stories, novels, essays, and/or plays, will allow students to encounter the economic, social, and cultural upheavals of recent times through the lens of British literature.
