To prepare competent entry-level surgical technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. This course reviews the pertinent anatomy and physiology related to the following surgical systems/specialties. General surgery, OBGYN, orthopedics, ear nose and throat (ENT), ophthalmic, neurology, spinal procedures, cardio thoracic, peripheral vascular, urology, maxillofacial, head and neck, plastics, geriatrics, trauma (pediatrics and adult), robotics and laser. Conditions that warrant surgical correction are discussed and studied in depth. Also introduced are common specialized instrumentation by type, function, and name. Common procedures in each of the surgical specialty areas are explained in depth; to include indication, anatomy involved, incision(s), patient positioning, prepping, draping, dressings and suture used in such cases.
