This course introduces the skills and approaches of literary studies through the exploration of novels written in or translated into English. Students will read works representing a variety of voices and viewpoints, analyzing novels using a range of critical frameworks. In addition, students will examine the social and cultural contexts in which assigned novels were written, developing an understanding that literature can reflect, critique, and even shape its cultural moment.
