The class emphasizes the influence of eastern religious traditions and culture on Christianity, the Roman reaction to Christianity, the formation and organization of early Christian communities, early Christian spirituality and religious practices. The course also emphasizes the divergence of eastern and western Christian traditions, the influence of Christianity on the rise of Islam, and Islam's impact on the Christian world.
