Musical Theatre is the most popular world-wide form of theatre. This course examines the development of this popular genre, from its roots in Europe and 19th Century America, to its reality in the present day. Course topics include: rock music and contemporary sounds in modern musicals, socio-political influences in musical theatre, influences of composers, landmark musical theatre productions, acting, sing, and dance styles in musical theatre, and the art of video and other forms of spectacle used in productions. This course provides optional opportunities for practical performance experiences and projects in acting, singing, and dancing, as well as other forms of presentation. Prerequisite(s): Course placement into college-level English and reading OR completion of ENGL 0950 with a grade of C or higher OR completion of RDNG 0940 with a grade of C or higher and qualifying English Placement Exam OR completion of RDNG 0950 with a grade of C or higher and ENGL 0090 with a grade of C or higher OR completion of ESOL 0051 with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0052 with a grade of C or higher.
