This course provides an overview of the concept of Homeland Security and the relationship to the Department of Homeland Security. This course builds on emergency concepts and explores the need to balance terrorism threats, natural disasters, and other hazards. Topics include homeland security organizations, public-private partnerships, intelligence and counterterrorism, border security and immigration, transportation safety and security, communications, cybersecurity, and critical infrastructure protection; identification of vulnerabilities, mitigation, prevention, and preparedness; all-hazards response and recovery; statutory actions, critical guidance documents, directives, and legislation; and the various programs and actions undertaken by government agencies, community organizations, and the private sector in support of homeland security. After successfully completing this course, students will have completed the required prerequisite training for the Critical Infrastructure Planner certification through the Minnesota Department of Homeland Security.
