This course is an introduction to the fundamental concepts of surface mining. Students are exposed to terminology, methods, practices, and case studies in surface mining. Course study will include examination of the coal industry as it relates to the international, national and regional coal markets along with study of the economic impact the coal industry has on our economy. Students will become familiar with fundamental concepts of reserves and resources and the factors that affect them. This course examines the life-cycle of a surface mine, including prospecting, geology, exploration, development, unit operations, extraction, and reclamation.
