The course is designed to introduce the student to the active role of the practical nurse in health care delivery. Emphasis is on the application of the nursing process to enable health promotion and prevention. Acute and chronic diseases/conditions of the medical-surgical patient across the lifespan are reviewed. The course's purpose is to assist the student in understanding the disease processes and conditions that affect their patients and their families. Additionally, it prepares the student for clinical settings in various health care agencies. The student will gain an awareness of the roles of other health care team members and community resources. Students must be accepted into the practical nursing program to enroll. This course is part of a required series to prepare students to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).
