A study of plants and herbal preparations widely used in maintaining health and treating disease in traditional and modern societies. Active ingredients, modern use and side effects will be studied. In lab, students will learn to analyze plants, over-the-counter-drugs and herbal supplements for active ingredients. Students will also learn how to make extractions and preparations from plant materials. This course is especially useful for students interested in careers in Pharmacy, Ethnobotany, Natural Medicine, Nursing and Medicine. Two hours of lecture and two 3 hour labs per week.
