Description:

This course will explore personal, social and ethical questions involving the practice of medicine. Using a wide variety of sources, we will examine issues that have been especially well articulated in modern literature and films that give voice to the patient, the caregiver, and the larger community as well. The relationships among these three groups and the complex issues of pain, sickness, healing and death will serve as topics for discussion and written analysis. This course is open to all but may be most useful to the student planning a career in the medical profession. Prerequisite: ENG 101.
