This course surveys literature of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries dealing with the urbanimaginary - the ways in which cities are defined and invested with meaning as noteworthy sitesof aspiration and destruction, tradition and modernity, conflict and connection. The primaryobjective is to gain an understanding of the ways in which city literature both shapes and isshaped by the changing and varied conditions under which it is produced. Students developcritical thinking and communication skills through, discussion, exams, presentations, and aresearch paper as they engage with texts covering a wide range of themes, styles, and points ofview. American fiction, poetry, and drama serve as a primary focus, but the course incorporatesan array of works dealing with metropolitan areas around the world - Lagos, London, Tokyo,Paris, and others - as well as a range of visual media including film, photography, painting, andtelevision. Key topics to which the course returns throughout the semester include therepresentation of race, gender and class; social, economic, and geographic mobility; identity; andcommunity, among others.
