Description:

This course will examine global societies through instrument and vocal musical form. An understanding of the Ethnomusicology field will be addressed to gain muscial content knowledge. An emphasis will be placed on traditional music making purposes according to eras and places, yet critical analysis of popular music and its means of sharing audible sound and their diasporic connections are addressed. Issues of power relations will be central to our exploration of how music circulates and what values (social. economic, and aesthetic) are acquired on specific markets. In so doing, we will situate these musics in relation to colonization, the politics of labeling, globalization, and music industries. Concentrated studies will center on Africa and its Diaspora in the Middle East, South America, and the Caribbean. East Asia, Asia, India, Oceania and Australia will be addressed.
