Despite the obsession of the public, the media, and politicians with the latest crisis in the Middle East or Russian misbehavior, the coming decades are most likely to be dominated by relations between the United States and East Asia. To understand East Asia it is useful to examine one of the Asian societies in some detail. The "usual suspects" are China and Japan.This course takes a different approach by examining Vietnam. Once we were enemies. Now we are not. The past thirty years has witnessed a tremendous amount of change in Vietnamese culture and society. Since 1986, when the Vietnamese government instituted the renovation policy (doi moi), Vietnam has become one of the "Asian Tigers" economies, it has become a popular tourist destination, religious practices have flourished, and many Vietnamese-Americans have returned to visit their country of origin.
