This course offers an introduction to the history of animation, focusing on commercial and artistic practices that expand cinematic modes of expression and experience. Topics explored include pre-cinematic origins (proto-cinema and early cinema), pioneering applications in film and television, advances in technology, the golden age of American animation, war propaganda, experimental and non-objective animation, avant-gardism, global appropriation and application, and digital animation in the age of New Media.
