Description:
A presentation of the basic concepts of the quantum theory of matter, with emphasis on physical models which provide a quantitative description of the solid state. Topics includes crystal structure, diffraction, the reciprocal lattice, chemical bonding in molecules and solids, lattice dynamics, phonons, thermal properties, the free electron gas, electrons in a periodic lattice, band structure, semiconductors, magnetic and optical properties, and superconductivity. Normally offered in the spring semester of odd numbered years. Prerequisites: PHYS 243.
