Exposure to linguistics and linguistic anthropology based on hands-on experience with collaboratively creating a "conlang," or invented humanoid language. Instruction will draw from examples of the range of human linguistic and cultural variation in order to address how to design the sound system, grammar, writing system and "mythology" or cultural context for the language. At the end of the semester, the class as a whole will have created a basic ConWorld, lexicon, grammar, writing system and translated texts into the language. Prerequisites: WRTG F111X; one semester of foreign language; ENGL F318, LING F101X, LING F223 or ANTH F260. Crosslisted with LING F389. Offered As Demand Warrants
