This course will introduce students to the human experience in the circumpolar North by exploring such themes in the social sciences and humanities as: a) the differences and commonalities between indigenous and non-indigenous visions, assumptions and experiences; b) the emphasis on nature and wilderness in popular culture and nature's inherent value to human physical and spiritual well being; c) political issues such as alienation from core political, economic and population centers and tension between pro-development and pro-conservationist forces; and d) how Northern literature reflects these and other aspects of human experience in the North. Course is taught online. Offered Every Fall
