The focus of this course is on morphological, physiological and behavioral responses of animals and plants to winter conditions. Strategies of avoidance and tolerance of cold temperatures and low resources will be discussed. Analysis of physical and biological processes in seasonally snow-covered ecosystems. Includes principles of radiation and heat exchange, physics and chemistry of snow, thermoregulatory strategies in animals, and discussion of how winter affects trophic dynamics and population processes. Prerequisites: BIOL F371. Offered Fall
