In-depth analysis of the literature regarding mass extinction, focusing on evidence for catastrophes and impact on the uniformitarian paradigm. Effects of mass extinctions on the evolutionary history of extant and fossil animals and plants will be explored through readings from classic and current literature in paleontology. The course will emphasize critical reading and application of scientific methods to reconstruction of geologically rapid events in deep time. Prerequisites: GEOS F322 and GEOS F315.
