This course will examine the genre of the short novelor novellaespecially its traditional and innovative narrative techniques, its various ways of constructing authorial point-of-view, its mode of plot compression, its diverse range of styles, and its respective place among canonical texts. Authors may include Graham Greene, Truman Capote, Nella Larson, Honore de Balzac, Agatha Christie, Robert Louis Stevenson, Don DeLillo, Thomas Mann, Franz Kafka, Joyce Carol Oates, Alice Munro, and John Steinbeck.
