This course asks students to consider the central role played by Florida in the history of multiple polities, regions, and peoples. Our first unit situates Florida within the expanding Atlantic World. We will examine intercultural contact, exchange, and conflict between diverse Europeans, Africans, and indigenous Americans from the time of the first recorded Spanish observations tothe conclusion of the Second Seminole War. The majority of onr study will focus on Florida as part of the United States, tracing the transition from territory to statehood. Here, we will see how Florida's history has encompassed at least three overlapping geographies, that of the U.S. south, the Caribbean, and the Sunbelt. Central topics will include the rise of the plantation system, the impact of railroads, epidemics and natural disasters, tourism, Walt Disney, and the military-industrial complex.
