This course actively engages students as they read and discuss current theory and research supporting emergent perspectives in children's abilities to read and write. Students examine the traditional assumptions regarding how and when young children become literate address ways in which this literature challenges current practice in the field. The course includes emergent perspectives, process and strategy orientations, documentation (as an alternative to assessment), empowerment through literacy and the creation of a developmental environment.
