This course emphasizes the cells and organs involved in humoral and cell-mediated immunity. Antigenantibody interactions, activation of the complement cascade, and triggering mechanisms of B-cell and T-cell responses are discussed. Students are introduced to specific disorders of the iimmune resonse associated with AIDS, allergies, blood transfusions, transplantations, and tumors. Students learn how to read, review and critique journal articles and present case studies. A research paper and presentation on a specific topic in immunology is required. 3 credits.
