This course will introduce students to the processes involved in the discovery and manufacturing of drugs in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Topics will include the drug development process and validation of useful targets, high throughput screening methodologies, standard operating procedures, quality control and assurace (QC and QA) and intellectual property and patenting issues. Students will discuss FDA regulations overseeing the drug approval process and become familiarwith guidelines that ensure compliance with good manufacturing and good laboratory practices. Biosafety concerns and ethical issues associated with clinical trials will be included to provide a comprehensive overview of the drug design process. Web materials and case studies will supplement the course.
