According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2003), 48% of teachers indicate that they have not had adequate training for dealing effectively with parents. This very interactive workshop, Developing Parental and Community Partnerships in Secondary Schools, is designed to help middle school and high school teachers and administrators cultivate healthy relationships with parents and community members. The purpose of the workshop is to evaluate what a teacher/school/district is presently doing to foster more parental and community interaction in the secondary schools and to design a plan to make a classroom, building, and/or district even more parent and community friendly. In addition, participants will plan for the needs of a growing multicultural school population by reflecting on cultural values of Latino families via personal conversations with parents. Participants will have the opportunity to review and create effective direct and indirect communication tools specific to their classroom or school that build stronger school-home relationships. Furthermore, participants will learn some effective strategies for dealing with uncooperative or hostile parents and for solving problems effectively with parents.
