This content-oriented workshop has three related purposes--first, to provide elementary and secondary teachers with an introduction to the structural characteristics of Ebonics, the most culturally significant and intensively studies ethnic lect of American English; second, to make these teachers aware of current scholarship regarding the historical origins of this lect; and third, to help them deal with the issues which this lect engenders in the classroom setting. Through the exploration of these topics, teachers will be much better prepared to provide language arts instruction to native speakers of Ebonics so that these students can enhance their social mobility by augmenting their linguistic repertoires with a standard dialect, by maximizing their literacy skills, and by enjoying the educational opportunities of an enriched classroom environment where they can engage in informative and mutually transformative dialogues with instructors who both appreciate and understand their linguistic cultural heritage. Recommended for K-12 English educators.
