Students never stop learning to read because reading is a complex set of skills, practices, and behaviors that must be adjusted for different kinds of texts and purposes for reading. Middle and secondary school teachers have become increasingly aware of the need to support adolescent readers as they gain strategies for reading with understanding and engagement in the various academic disciplines. This workshop will assist teachers from all academic disciplines in a) finding the intersections in reading/literacy and their disciplinary goals for learning, b) developing a complex and personal definition of reading within their disciplines, c) identifying and supporting adolescents'' emerging literacy needs, and d) designing reading-to-learn experiences within the content classroom that build student expertise and engagement in reading.
