Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy that examines the nature of art, the character of our experience of art and of the natural environment, and how these experiences shape out attitudes and spirit. Aesthetics seeks to know how the sensory experiences of les beaux arts (painting, poetry, sculpture, music, dance, performance, literature, film, photography, architecture, mass/popular art, etc.) and their attendant feelings inspire an apppreciation (or disapproval) within us. The cental issue of aesthetics has historically been the the definition of "art" and "beauty;" thus aesthetics walks a tightrope between relative/universal, subjective/objective, and cultural criteria. In this seminar course, students will enter into the philosophical fray as they read and discuss classical and contemporary sources regarding the nature of art.
