Concentrates on the emergence of paradoxical dialectics through conflict, synthesis, and violence, including: North and South, Reformism and Conservatism; Immigrant and Nativist; Romantics and Scientists; do-gooders and exploiters; men and women. The course stresses the chaos, change, creativity, morality and mendacity of Jacksonian America. Prerequisites: HIST 112, 113, 212, or 220. Offered Alternate years.
