Prerequisites: Art Education major. A minimum of C is required in all major courses. This first course in the professional art education sequence is designed to introduce future art teachers to the importance of the visual arts in education through theory, practice, and field experiences. Students will begin to explore contemporary practices, issues, and trends in art education, and examine the characteristics and dispositions of quality art instruction in the K-12 schools. The course introduces critical areas of inquiry necessary to create a firm foundation in curriculum and pedagogy through readings, discussions, artmaking, assignments, presentations, and field experiences. Art classroom observations in the K-12 schools will be required and arranged by the STEP Office and course instructor.
