This course introduces students to the field of Environmental History. Environmental History is a field of inquiry that seeks to understand how humans have influenced the natural world, as well as how the natural world has affected human thought and action. The course will examine the development of Environmental History as a discipline since the 19th century by focusing on a series of case studies from the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia. It will focus in particular on changes in land use that accompanied European exploration and industrialization, the development of Conservationist thinking, the rise of National Parks and wildlife conservation, and the emergence of the Modern Environmentalism in the late 20th Century.
