Restriction: Open only to students in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and Special Education. An introduction to general chemistry and biology concepts and their relationship with current issues in the study of genetics, the environment and human health. Scientific principles necessary to understand topics such as human nutrition and disease, human impacts on the biosphere, and the debate over teaching evolution in public schools are considered. A strong emphasis is placed upon the process of science as a form of inquiry, and the theory of evolution as the foundation of modern biology. Laboratory experiments, discussions and written assignments will complement the course, which is designed to meet New Jersey state content curriculum standards in chemistry and life science.
