This course provides fundamental instruction in Modern Dance Technique. Students will learn how to put into action a wide range of movement concepts and skills. Instruction provides methods for improving movement organization, efficient and effective strength and stamina building, with a strong emphasis on developing performance skills. Prerequisites: B.A. Dance Major, Not Modern Concentration. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Identify and demonstrate the following basic modern dance concepts and principles: spinal suppleness; practical use of opposition; effective use of effort; movement stabilization and breathe support for developing strength, stamina and agility; dynamic use of central axis for balance, suspension, weight shift, fall and recovery; movement organization, and increased range of motion. (2) Identify and demonstrate basic approaches to presentation and performance. (3) Organize and execute class material with fundamental musicality and phrasing. (4) Perceive and identify strengths and areas in need of improvement to demonstrate basic ability to self-evaluate student growth. (5) Identify and write about the history and aesthetic of selected artists that make up the modern dance canon.
