The Class will read and analize short essays and the novel The Love in the time of Cholera by the Nobel Prize of Literature Garcia Marquez. Set in exotic Caribbean seaports and the Magdalena River (Colombia), it relates one of literature' stories of unrequited love. The Magdalena River could be a metaphorical approach which connects the novel with ecological implications, love and navigation adventures. The novel is a masterpiece of prose because of its ability to summon up textures, sensual pleasures and landscapes associated with living in a particular place and time. The students will discuss the novel, essays, films, do group activities/projects, take quizzes and give presentations in context during the course. Novel is available in English and Spanish. Films and documentaries will be availabe with English subtitles. Gabriel Garca Mrquez is one of the most emblematic authors in the Spanish language and winner of the Nobel Prize of literature in 1982. His novel, Love in Time of Cholera, is part of the Latin American Literary Post-boom canon. This course will explore in depth the nature of love with its multiple variants and interpretations in Colombian society. We will also analyze the connections and disconnections between love and the Colombian landscape, and the ecological dimensions of this novel. We will additionally examine the film version of the novel to study the visual representation of affective feelings, tragedy and the physical environment. This course will provide students the opportunity to examine various forms of textual and film analysis. This class will be conducted in English and Spanish; students may choose to read and write in Spanish if proficient.
