Description:

Defining American Modernism as the cultural response to rapid social changes brought on by innovations in technology and shifts in the global economy, this course examines the interplay between key literary texts, popular texts, social issues, and events that shaped early twentieth-century Americans' sense that they were living in a changed world. Some of the social issues open to exploration may be gender, race, psychology, social Darwinism, the breakdown of traditions, mass culture vs. literary form, and the mechanization of modern life.
