This online course is an introduction (no previous Spanish language skills are required) to practical language skills used in clinical settings and in basic interactions with Spanish-speaking patients. It includes an emphasis on the common medical vocabulary that health care workers may encounter in the workplace. Students will gain practical competency in the following areas: awareness of cultural differences among patients based on region of origin, basic knowledge of some health remedies, be able to question patients and obtain yes or no responses about patient status or complaints, and inform or instruct patients using appropriate vocabulary. Note: a student wishing to take 2 semesters of Spanish would take SPAN 300 followed by SPAN 111. Students would not be allowed to receive credit both for SPAN 300 and SPAN 110.
