This course focuses in depth on several representative cultures from south and southeast Asia. The traditional music of Malaysia, Indonesia and India is examined as a human activity in diverse historical, social, and cultural contexts. Films, videos, slides, sound recordings, and live performances are used to bring the student as close as possible to the culture being studied. Previous knowledge of music is not required. Offered fall and spring. 3 credits
