This course presents a chronological survey of various types of portraiture: single portrait, self portrait, forms of group portraiture, ideal portrait, state portraiture/heroic portraiture and the theatrical portrait. Stylistic changes and questions of content, social context and reception will be addressed. 3 credits uses. Although the greatest attention will be focused on the work of the greatest masters of portraiture of both European and American, less famous artists will also be discussed. Differences in representation related to gender and ethnicity will be considered as well as the projection of mood, personality and status. Offered Spring 3cre
