This course presents a chronological survey of various types of portraiture: single portrait, self portrait, forms of group portraiture, ideal portrait, state portraiture/heroic portraiture and the theatrical portrait. Stylistic changes and questions of content, social context and reception will be addressed. 3 credits uses. Although the greatest attention will be focused on the work of the greatest masters of portraiture of both European and American, less famous artists will also be discussed.
