Description:

This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the need for and development of a signed/manual language system. The class will examine the historical perspective of medical, educational, legal and societal influences on the continuum of approaches used to facilitate manual/gestural communication with the hearing-impaired populations. It will relate this information to the contemporary struggles the Deaf face regarding intellectual, social and economic forces that impact their acceptance within the mainstream of society. The course participants will gain a sensitive perspective toward the emotional, psychological and cultural needs of this exceptional population as well as survival language/signing skills that will enable them to communicate basic needs with the Deaf. Through the class sessions, texts, field trips, films, and guest speakers, the students will master the course outcomes; they will have a signing vocabulary of more than 200 words and, based on "Pidgin Sign English" (PSE), will communicate in sentences, describe events and tell/understand simple stories.
