These courses analyze fundamental readings in Latin American literature from colonial to modern times. The study of each major work includes an examination of its literary, political, and social contexts and its relevance to the universality of the human experience. Students learn different approaches to the study of a literary text and come to an understanding of narrative structure and the role of the narrator. Student commentaries are presented in Spanish both orally and in writing. Class discussions are entirely in Spanish. Prerequisites: SPA 203 and 204 or approval of the department chair. At least one semester is required of all Spanish majors. Offered upon suf?cient enrollment, alternate years in fall and spring. 3 credits
