An introduction to the writing and thinking strategies necessary for success in college. Includes review of and practice in the fundamentals of composition and development of critical thinking skills through personal, expository, and argumentative essays related to a specific theme. Some of the themes for the fall semester sections include: The Words of your Worlds: Writing about Language and Identity; A War of Words: Writing about Gender and Language; Writing about Sports and Society; Honey from Stone: Writing about the Natural World; Heroes of the Media Age: Writing about Presidential Candidates; Moses and Messiahs: Writing about Superheroes of the Bible; and The Language of the Heart: Writing about Sacred Literature. Course is required of all first-year students unless exempt by the department. students unless exempt by the department. Students are not allowed to withdraw from the course except in cases of documented exigencies. In all such cases, permission from the Composition Coordinator is required to withdraw from the course. Any student who is not exempt from the course and who does not successfully complete the course in the fall semester is required to take the course again in the spring semester of the student's first year. Offered fall and spring. 3 credits
