In the first semester, this course presents a survey of Russian history before the modern period to discover how the Russian past helped to determine its present. Emphasis is on comparing Russian development with that of Western Europe and the implications of that comparison. second semester, student study the efforts to liberalize Russia and an intensive study of Soviet Russia, showing the elements of continuity with the Russian past underlying apparently total change. Two semesters. Offered as required. 3 credits
