RELS 311 - Women in Religion & Society

Institution:
Cabrini University - Closed
Subject:
Religious Studies
Description:
This course traces in rigorous depth the ?gure of Eve as represented and interpreted for more than three thousand years in Judeo-Christian thought and more broadly in Western culture. It explores with particular intensity Eve's relationship to both hegemonic and subversive portrayals of femininity, as well as the extent to which her passionately contested story continues to influence the way women today imagine and experience themselves as spiritual, intellectual, and sexual subjects. Beyond a focus on religious literacy, a scrutiny of the politics and pleasures of Biblical exegesis will introduce students to critical concepts in the ?elds of art history, folklore, literary, feminist, and popular culture studies.
