Focus will be placed on the social, cultural, economic, and political developments whichhave contributed to the making of modern France as well as the transformation of Europe and the world duringthe nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Major themes include: the French Revolution; nineteenth century socialchange; the realist movement; the Third Republic; French colonialism; the two World Wars; Existentialism;France in the European Union; immigration and France today.
