The dominant Western cultural patterns of the late 19th and 20th centuries as reflected in literature, philosophy, music, the natural and social sciences and the visual arts. Major figures might include Chekhov, Marx, Van Gogh, Woolf, Schoenberg, Kafka, Dali, Sartre, Freud, Stravinsky and Heisenberg, among others.
